What's wrong with the File

The most likely answer is that you have edited the Variety File (VARIETY.WBD) directly and not done it quite right or there is a variety stored in the program that is causing multiple entries to be placed at the end of the file.

If there is a problem with this file then it must be fixed before WineBase can run and the program should be listing it for you in NotePad so you can look at it, find the error and correct the problem.

If the file isn't being listed for you please open it in NotePad or WordPad, the full path to it is c:\WineBase32\variety.wbd".

The error message dialog should be giving you some indication as to where the error in the file is.

What not to do

You do not need to re-install the program or delete your data files or restore a backup set of data files as the problem is not in the program or your data files, it's in the variety maturity lookup file.

What to look for in VARIETY.WBD

Each line consists of "Variety,GoodFrom,BestAt,GoodTo," and ends with a Carriage Return (ENTER KEY) including the last line and each line has 4 commas (and only 4) in it.

Cabernet Franc/Merlot,3,4,6,
Cabernet Sauvignon,3,8,12,
Cabernet/Malbec/Merlot,2,4,8,
Cabernet/Malbec/Syrah,2,4,8,
Cabernet/Merlot,3,5,8,
Cabernet/Merlot/Shiraz,4,6,8,

Blank lines are not allowed, neither are spaces between the text and numbers and commas (apart from in the Variety) or spaces before the Variety.

Commas are not allowed in the Variety and the Variety is limited to 25 characters.

The GoodFrom, BestAt and GoodTo numbers should be asending such as 2,4,8 or some or all can be the same such as 2,2,4 but 2,8,4 is not allowed.

So all of these are wrong...

Cabernet Franc/Merlot,3,4,6,
Cabernet Sauvignon,3,8,12,
a blank line
Cabernet/Malbec/Merlot,2,4,8,

Cabernet,Malbec,Syrah,2,4,8,Commas in the Variety
Cabernet/Merlot,3,5,8,
Cabernet/Merlot/Shiraz,4,6,8,

Cabernet Franc/Merlot,3,4,6,
Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Merlot,3,8,12,Variety too long
Cabernet/Malbec/Merlot,2,4,8,

Cabernet Franc/Merlot,3,4,6,
Cabernet Sauvignon,3,12,8,Numbers out of sequence
Cabernet/Malbec/Merlot,2,4,8,

Fixing the problem

The problem line lill usually be at the end of the file so scroll down and see if there is anything obvious (blank line, missing numbers, commas where they shouldn't be, multiple entries of the same variety, etc.).

So fix the errors, save the file via the File menu Save option and restart WineBase.

If it runs, fine, if not then there's still a problem and you'll be back in Notepad looking at the VARIETY.WBD file again after possibly passing though a message box telling you to read the Help file, re: Variety File Error.

A useful trick if there appears to be nothing wrong with the file is to place the cursor at the end of the last line of text in the file, ie. to the right of the last comma and press the ENTER key on the keyboard (cursor will move down to the start of the next blank line) and then press the DELETE key several times (cursor will not move) and then save the file.
